Mathematics
Mathematics is a discipline that trains the mind in precision, reasoning, and order. The study of mathematics begins in the elementary grades, where it is of vital importance to first lay a strong foundation in arithmetic. Students learn that mathematics is not simply about numbers, but about understanding relationships, quantities, and the logical structure of the created world.
Mathematics through a Classical Approach
-
In early elementary years, focus is on mastering foundational knowledge, or the "grammar" of mathematics, first through systematic memorization of facts, such as multiplication tables and formulas. Students at Cornerstone develop a strong number sense and solid understanding of how numbers work.
-
Mathematics then takes a new approach by guiding students from concrete foundational knowledge to abstract concepts, where teachers introduce using manipulatives and hands-on activities, which allows students to see, touch, and build before moving to abstract ideas.
-
As students enter middle school, our course of mathematics study shifts to the "logic" stage, where students learn to think critically and analyze the "why" behind mathematical truths. This stage focuses on developing reasoning skills, exploring mathematical proofs, and understanding how algebraic, geometric, and other concepts fit together.
Cornerstone’s mathematics instruction follows Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards and incorporates classical methodologies supported by modern research in cognitive development.
The Singapore Math curriculum is incorporated into our instructional program.
